Do You Need a Water Softening System?

Do you have hard water in you home? If you are not sure, here are a few signs of hard water: clogged up shower heads, mineral deposit in sinks and toilets, mineral stains on laundry, and filmy residue on glasses after washing. So, what can you do about it? You need to "soften" the water, or remove the minerals. You can either do that at the point of use, say the kitchen sink, but it often makes the most sense to soften the water as it enters your house, with a whole house water softener system.

There are two basic types of water softening systems, those that use salt and those are considered salt-free. Most manufacturers of softeners, such as Morton, Waterboss and Culligan, provide both types of systems. The first type of system works by simply mixing salt with the incoming water. The salt reacts with the minerals in the water and the result is removed from the water. No salt water softener systems are a bit more complicated in operation.

Water softeners are not cheap, starting at several hundred dollars, but if you take the long term view, they can be worthwhile. How much will it cost you to clean and maintain the various home appliances that can become clogged or stained by prolonged exposure to hard water. One option that might make the cost easier to bear is to look at combination water filter and softener system, since the benefits of clean water for drinking are much easier to appreciate.
