Do your part and conserve our precious water!

With another hot and dry summer approaching, many cities and municipalities are introducing new water conservation measures in an attempt to reduce water consumption during the dry summer months. To this end, many are beginning to install water meters for billing purposes and are moving from a flat rate system to a user pay system. This tactic seems to make sense because why should one home with just two people living in it pay the same for their water as the house next door that may have a family of six that use a heck of a lot more water.

As more and more pressure is put on our water supply systems, we will have to get much smarter about using things like water that we have taken for granted for so long.

How can you make a difference?

Here are a few tips that may help make it easier to use less water...

Check for leaks

While you are carefully watching your water usage, it is important to make sure that water is not slipping away due to undetected leaks in your system. Many undetected leaks allow water and your money to go down the drain. To help detect unseen leaks, examine your water meter (if you have one). Some homes can waste more than 10% due to unknown water leaks and this wasted water costs both you and the environment.

There are several reasons why you'd want to examine your water meter. First, you might be interested in just how much water you use in a day. By reading your meter at the beginning and the end of the day, you can compare the two totals to determine how much water you and your family used. As you and your family start to incorporate water saving measures, you can easily see just how much water you're saving.

The second reason is to check for water leaks. You can tell if you have a leak by turning off all the taps in your house. Then, take a look at your water meter and if you see that it is still turning, chances are you have a leak somewhere.

Toilet Leaks

Toilets are a common source of unnoticed leaks. Undetected, hundreds of litres of water can be wasted each day. Leaks often occur when component parts are worn and need replacing or adjusting. Here are a few simple tips to tell if your toilet is leaking:

- Listen for leaks. If you hear the sound of running water, your toilet is leaking.
- Add food colouring or dye to the toilet tank and wait 20 minutes. If coloured water appears in the toilet bowl, a leak is present.

If your home was built before 1992 and the toilet has never been replaced, then it is very likely that you do not have a water-efficient 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. You can check the date stamp inside the toilet by lifting the lid and looking at the back of the toilet at the manufacturer's imprint of the make, model and date of manufacture.

Faucet Leaks

Remember to check all faucets and pipes periodically. Watch for drips, and quickly replace faulty parts. A leaking faucet can waste as much drinking water in a single day as the amount required to sustain one person for an entire week.

Replace your Clothes Washer, the second largest water user in your home.

Energy Star rated washers that also have a Water Factor at or lower than 9.5, use 35-50% less water and 50% less energy per load. This saves you money on both your water and energy bills.

Irrigation System Leaks

Another large water waster can be leaks in your irrigation system. Fix irrigation system leaks quickly and check for water in the gutters or mud puddles. Inspect your sprinklers and drip sprayers regularly for leaks during the daytime, since the optimal time to water is in the night-time hours when you cannot observe leaks. If you have an older irrigation system, over 50% and even more than 75% of the water can be lost to leaks.

Plant the Right Plants with Proper Landscape Design & Irrigation

Whether you are putting in a new landscape or slowing changing the current landscaping at your home, select plants that are appropriate for your local climate conditions. Having a yard with 100% lawn turf area in a dry climate uses significant amounts of water to keep the grass green.

Water Only What Your Plants Need

Most water is wasted in your garden by watering when you plants do not need the water or by not maintaining the irrigation system. Be attentive if you are manual watering by setting your oven timer or some other reminder to move the sprinkler promptly. If you have an irrigation system, make sure your irrigation controller has a rain shutoff device and that it's appropriately scheduled. Most water is wasted in the months prior to or just after the rainy season when intermittent rains occur.

Your next door neighbor was up all night dealing with a busted water heater and you just spent the last half hour listening to him complain. He had rusty water pouring out of the ceiling, because the water heater was up in the attic above the master bedroom. The emergency drain pan that was supposed to catch all the water from the leaking water heater was plugged up with insulation that had fallen into the pan over the years. His bedroom is flooded. His bed is wet. The ceiling is falling down. He is tired and cranky from being up all night.

You get to thinking that you sure are glad it has not happened to you. You are smart enough to realize at this point that all the houses in the neighborhood were built at the same time. Your water heater is now about twelve years old and you are positive that your water heater is living on borrowed time. You heard how much trouble your neighbor went through last night. His plumbing bill was pretty high since the plumber had to go out in the middle of the night, but that is the least of his problems. His bed is ruined, and the carpet and ceiling too.

You know some basic plumbing essentials and you have a friend that knows a little about plumbing, so you recruit your friend and decide to tackle this project over the weekend. It is good that you have a friend to help because your water heater is in the attic, like your neighbors.

The basic steps to installing your own water heater are as follows:

Step 1. You go up into the attic and devise your strategy for lowering and raising the tanks. The tank is heavy, so you will probably want to have some very strong rope so that you can lower the old water heater down and raise the new one up.

Step 2. Turn off the gas going to the water heater at the valve that connects to the front of the water heater. Disconnect the gas line from the water heater.

Step 3. Turn off the water to the water heater or if the valve is not working turn off the water to the house. If the valve is not working it will need to be replaced. In a future article we will discuss how to replace your valve.

Step 4. Disconnect the water lines going to the tank. The water lines are often flexible lines that have a nut that you can turn counter clockwise to remove.

Step 5. Disconnect the vent pipe from the top of the tank.

Step 6. Drain the water heater by connecting a water hose to the drain connection at the bottom of the water heater.

Step 7. Lower the old water heater down the attic stairs using your very strong rope and your very strong and well coordinated friends help. This is probably the most dangerous parts of the entire project. Please be careful not to hurt anyone, including yourself.

Step 8. Raise your new tank into the attic the same way you got the old one out.

Step 9. Put the new water heater into the drain pan, making sure to clean the pan and inspect for holes in the pan first.

Step 10. Reconnect the water lines and gas lines and vent the same way you took them apart.

Step 11. Your water heater is now installed and you are ready to turn on the water. Have your friend stay in the attic to watch for leaks while you turn the water on very slowly. Look at each connection that you made and check for leaks. If you spot a leak make sure to tighten it up. Do not tighten it up so hard that it breaks a fitting. Turn on the water on the hot side at a tub spout and bleed all the air out of the water heater and water lines. Run the water in the tub until water comes out clean and clear with no air bursts.

Step 12. Turn on the gas at the gas valve that is connected in front of the tank. Have a solution of soapy water ready so that you can pour soapy water over the gas fittings to check for leaks. If you see bubbles then you have a leak. Turn off the gas and repair the leak before you do anything else.

Step 13. After you have confirmed that there are no leaks you can now turn on the gas and light the pilot according to the manufacturers instructions. The instructions on lighting the pilot are often hidden on the front of the water heater. If you have trouble lighting the pilot you can call the help line that is usually provided on the front of the heater.

Step 14. Share a cold beverage of your choice with your friend that helped you out with your project, because he deserves it and so do you. This part is required and not negotiable.

Enjoy your new water heater and the satisfaction you have in doing it yourself.

Of course if you have any problems or questions please call a licensed and insured plumber to help you out. It would be wise to contact your local city hall or code enforcement authorities to make sure that your project is up to code. The city you live in will likely have a list of current code requirements for your area. Also before undertaking a job like this, make sure you ask them about getting the needed permits and inspections and what the requirements are. Do not attempt this task unless you are in good physical condition, as this is very hard work and nobody wants you to get hurt. These steps are not intended to be all inclusive for every situation so please carefully research the job at hand before starting your project.

Heating Water for Domestic Hot Water or to Heat Your Home

Water is heated for two purposes in residential applications. The first is to heat for domestic use. Such a cleaning, washing, cooking, showers and bathing. The second is to heat as a medium for carrying that heat to a room then releasing the heat into that room to keep us warm.

Hot Water Tanks

There are three main types or ways to heat water for domestic purposes. These are the following:

Tankless water heaters

Tankless heaters are becoming more common in North America, although these have been used in other parts of the world for years. This kind of heater does not have any water in a tank. If you do not have a tank then you will not have to continually keep that water heated as the water will always cool even when not in use. The cooling process is caused by heat from the water warming the air in the flue, then the hot air rises and is displaced by cooler air which is in turn heated by the hot water (convection heat just like baseboard heating). This air will flow up the flue and spill out into the room. Also the water in the tank will cool as heat conducts through the tank and into the room. This cooling process is called standby loss and because of this process your water heater is at best 55% efficient.

Tankless water heaters are more efficient than hot water tanks because of the heating process. A hot water heater will heat the bottom of the tank and the center of the tank, with most of the energy leaving the tank up the flue. Where as a tankless water heater heats a coil of pipes inside of a heat exchanger similar to that of a boiler. This heat exchanger is made up of small tubes that heat up very fast.

A tankless water heater will also modulate the burner. So if you need only a small demand the tankless heater will only give you a small flame. And if you need a larger demand a tankless water heater will give you a larger flame.

Hot Water Tanks

Hot water tanks are the most common form in North America to heat your domestic water. These tanks have been around for a very long time and have not changed much until recently. Most homes use a 40 to 50 US gallon tank. Between high energy costs and pollution many people are switching to better ways to heat there water.

A hot water tank requires a chimney for the flue gases to flow to the outside (except power vent and direct vent water heaters, these can be piped out the wall). Hot water tanks also have an anode rod to protect the tank, a dip tube to allow the cold water to flow to the bottom of the tank, a gas valve, burner and a relief valve. NEVER plug a relief valve. This is the largest cause of water heater explosions. Water when heated to boiling changes to steam. When this happens the water expands 1700 times and with no where to go the tank has to blow up. Usually the bottom is what bursts and the unit becomes a rocket shooting through the roof in a two story building.

Indirect water heaters--An indirect water heater uses a boiler to heat the water that flows through the inside of a coil of pipe which in turns heats the domestic water through conduction. These are very efficient, have a fast response time and out last a standard water heater more than three to one. The response time is very quick giving you more than enough hot water. In my opinion these are the best water heaters on the market. The biggest problem is that you need a boiler to heat the water therefore the cost can be high compared to a normal water heater. If you are renovating and going to install hot water heating of any sort, such as a fan coil instead of a high efficient furnace, then this is the way to go

Heating your home

Heating water to heat your home is best done with a boiler. The reason I say this is that a boiler is meant to heat water in an efficient manner, while your water heat is not. A standard water heater has an efficiency of 65% to 70% including standby losses. A standard boiler runs at about 80%. The boilers I install have an efficiency rating of between 85% and 98% depending on the system and time of year. So you could use a water heater to heat your home (check with local codes), but the lifespan is much less and your heating bill will be much greater. Not worth the $2500 to $3500 difference between the two. (my opinion). You could use a tankless water heater, but you will need two or three if you are heating your domestic water as well. Still compared with a condensing boiler you are only saving less than $1000

Hard water is a common problem in the United States that many homeowners have dealt with at some point. While an understanding of the common effects of hardness causing ions is the first step in appreciating that something needs to be done, a basic review of the formation of hard water and the variety of treatment approaches available can be a tremendous help in making an informed decision about the product that is most suitable for an individual's unique needs. There are many different types of softeners currently available that use a handful of techniques to either remove or alter the components of the ions that cause the adverse effects that many people are familiar with. The most appropriate product for a given situation is heavily dependent on the severity of the problem and the home owner's concern over environmental effects.

The most fundamental concept that one must understand in order to appreciate the cause of hardness is the fact that all residential water comes from a municipal supplier or well that is connected to a natural source.

Lakes and streams are very common sources that are used to provide individuals with the water that they need to survive and to carry out basic tasks in the home including washing dishes and clothes, watering plants, taking showers, and a variety of other daily routines. Natural sources are formed by the combination of rain and underground streams that work together to replenish the supply that is drawn on for consumption by human beings. As water flows through the environment, it collects and carries particles that are found naturally in the air and soil. Two of the particles found naturally in the soil are responsible for the hardness of water.

Calcium and magnesium are the two particles that are responsible for causing hardness and they are found in high concentrations in the soil found in Midwestern states. Many of the streams in the United States flow towards the center of the Country where they converge to form the major waterways that lead to the Gulf of Mexico. The large volume of water flowing towards the Midwest results in increasing concentrations of calcium and magnesium as one travels from the Coastal states toward the Central states. Individuals who live in the Midwest have far more problems with hard water than those who live on the Coasts because their water carries more of the ions that cause hardness. The concentration of these ions found in a specific area can usually be determined by contacting the local supplier directly.

Water that contains calcium and magnesium has not been shown to compromise human health, but it does result in a number of irritating effects in the home that may include things like scale deposits on the bottom of pots and pans, soap rings around the bathtubs, decreased lathering of soaps and detergents, and dry skin. Water that contains large concentrations of these ions may cause clothing to deteriorate faster and may result in scale deposits that damage hot water tanks and clog pipes. In order to eliminate these problems, most people find that it is necessary to install a softener in their home. There are many different types of products available and a general understanding of each is an important part of deciding which product is best suited to your unique needs.

The most effective type of softener is one that replaces the calcium and magnesium ions with either sodium or potassium ions. These salt-based products completely remove hardness causing ions, but they also add salt to the waste water system and may cause damage to the environment by directly contributing to the deposit of salts in streams, rivers, and agricultural areas. Alternative softeners claim to alter the structure of hardness causing ions so that they cannot accumulate as scale and are naturally washed away in the waste water system.

These systems are attached to a pipe and use an electric or magnetic current that water must pass through before entering the main plumbing network. Alternative systems are less effective, but may be appropriate in cases of minor hardness or when the homeowner is concerned about the effect on the environment.

Have you ever wondered just how do water filters work? Home water filters have evolved into a compact unit or combination of units in answer to the ever growing number of toxins in the water supply.

Even if most of them are quite cheap, you have a right to know just what you are getting and the relative efficiency of each type.

Municipality Filtration materials:

Water filtered through sand, was probably the first type of filter used. They are very good for clearing the water, giving it a clean appearance. These are used extensively by Municipalities. Throw in some chlorine and that's what is piped to your home.

The two main types of home water filters are the gravity fed and the mains pressure fed systems.

Gravity fed:

These are free standing vessels which sit on a bench top. They normally have two chambers. Water is poured by hand into the top chamber. This chamber has a filter--often a ceramic 'candle' whose walls are impregnated with silver. The silver acts as a biocyde, killing off microbes. The inside of the candle is filled with activated carbon. 'Activated' simply means that the carbon material is processed in such a way as to increase its surface area, thus, increasing its adsorption surface area.

Purified water is gravity-forced into the lower chamber at a rate of around 1-2 litres an hour. These filters are quite efficient, can be pleasing to look at, and have the advantage of being portable--great for camping too. 

Mains pressure fed:

Many home water filters use materials contained within tubes or units. They may be positioned under the sink; on top of the sink; on the shower; at the fridge or at the point of entry of the water to the house. Mains water pressure, forces the water through, allowing only clean, pollutant free water to pass. The mediums used, determines what is taken out; what is left in, and by to what degree the water pressure is slowed.

The common materials used in pressure fed systems are:

Carbon, such as charcoal or coconut shell has been used in the past, and is still being used because it is an excellent filtering material. It works in three ways.

1. Unwanted particles don't pass through thus removing them from the water.

2. Toxic chemicals, eg chlorine are chemically attracted to the carbon's surface, effectively removing these as well. This process is called adsorption (collecting on the surface).

3. Number two above allows beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium, to pass, because their atoms don't bond with the carbon. These minerals along with others, give drinking water its pleasant taste.

Ion exchange: Water is passed over electrically charged resin spheres which exchange ions with substances in the water, changing them. Useful for softening water.

Membranes are used to filter out unwanted substances. Reverse osmosis systems use this by forcing untreated water through a semi permeable membrane. Their downside is that there is a lot of waste water; they don't remove chlorine and other chemical substances; are costly to run and also remove calcium and magnesium.

Others:

UV filters have the water pass through a Ultra Violet tube. Good for killing micro-organisms but don't remove other toxins.

Distillation methods, heat up the water and the cooling water collects in another vessel.  Good if you want demineralized tasteless water but not otherwise.

How do water filters work is a matter, then, of the filtering materials used and what home water needs to be filtered. The better ones employ more than one stage in the filtering process, as, only in this way, can all of the unwanted substances be removed.  There are many good brands of home water filters on the market, but as you will see below, the best need not be costly.

Before you drink another glass of water from your kitchen tap, think about the source of the water. Your local water supply has done its best to purify the water before it came to you, but rules governing water purification can vary. When the local municipality received the water, it would have been full of pesticides and other chemicals, as well as industrial sludge and disease- bearing pathogens. The water that gushes from your kitchen tap started out this way! Even if your water comes from natural sources, you may still want to check the levels of contaminants in it.

Years ago, there was no need to worry about toxins from chemical waste and industrial sludge. The Romans and the Mayans just piped their water overland using aqueducts and that was the municipal water distribution! In more recent history, we too, took our water for granted.

We were understandably proud of the fact that our water was pure and drinkable. While there are regulations in place, these are fallible, and two strong water contaminants (chlorine and fluoride) may be part of the chemical prescription used to purify it.

Nowadays, even in North America, we have heard of injury and deaths due to contaminated water supplies. Water is a large part of our life, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the human body mass. It is an essential part of living as without it, we are dead.

We are told that drinking copious amounts of water may improve our health, but if we continually drink water containing contaminants we could become susceptible to many illnesses, from asthma to Parkinson's disease. Very few of us have ever initiated our own water test, so it would seem that we trust the local government. Yet, the move to bottled water has increased in the last decade and many of us have large quantities of water delivered to our home.

For a while carrying bottled water was 'cool'. Lately, however, certain insights have jaundiced the love affair with bottled water. For instance, one famous company was found to be bottling 'fake' water (taken from a tap!) Recently we were informed of the possibility that the chemicals from the plastic bottle containing our pure bottled water could actually leach into water!

There is one alternative left and that is water that is filtered within your home. These need not necessarily cost huge amounts of money. A whole house filtration system can cost a thousand dollars, but if you consider that you only drink the water from your kitchen tap, then a small attachment at the sink is less than one hundred dollars. Most water filters specify which germs they remove, all of them remove lead and chlorine, and three on the market remove E-coli.

Whichever action you decide to take, either an up to date water test, a kitchen tap filtration system or a whole house filtration unit, your action will help to sell your house more quickly if you can assure a prospective buyer that your home has pure water.

Water heaters can break down without warning. During the life your home, the water heater will need to be replaced many times. So, it is often leaking for a long time before you will even notice.

Washing machine hoses also have a tendency to leak. In actuality, you should shut the valve behind your washing machine after ever use. But, almost no one ever does this. This means that water pressure on the hose is unrelenting. Cheap hoses are not meant to be used like expensive pipes that you'd use for plumbing.

Hundreds of gallons of water will flow through that washing machine over a few uses. It does not take much for the hose to break, puncture or come loose. This will lead to leaks.

How Does This Effect Your Drinking Water?

In two ways:

1. Leaking washing machine hoses lead to mold growth. The water you bathe in, wash your clothes in, or drink can easily be contaminated with mold spores.

2. Your hot water heater is leaking and refilling with dirty water. This leads to rusting and mold growth.

Literally, it will pump rusty, mold spore riddled water into your sink. You cook with that water, take showers in it and drink it. Obviously, rust and mold are not healthy to drink. If you see a discoloration in your water or notice a bad smell, chances are you are having this problem.

It is dangerous and needs to be addressed quickly by a professional plumber. Do not wait until you or your children get sick to fix the problem.

Have a plumber check your water heater for leaks and change the hoses of the washing machine often to avoid these issues.

We are trying to "think green" and many of us are buying products that consume less energy. Are economy automobiles and tankless water heaters similar?

The ways in which consumers select them are similar and the answer is often "yes".

We are thinking of tankless heaters in respect to the fact that they use substantially less energy simply because they only use energy when they are making hot water. As tankless water heaters are sized by their abilities to raise the temperature of water and send it out of the heater in a specified gallons per minute capacity (Or liters per minute) they are a different concept than the typical tank type heater. Once a person determines the gallons per minute (GPM) that are needed for an application, a tankless heater can be selected. Tankless heaters come in many sizes and different types of design and construction.

Selecting a tankless heater is in some ways similar to buying a new car. Many people are looking at small cars because they consume less fuel for each mile driven. Maybe they are trading-in the "gas guzzler"? But certainly most people realize that they are reducing the size and power when they switch to a small car? For example; when one wants a car that gets tremendous miles per gallon, typically they have a very small engine and the car itself is also very small. As the horsepower and size are enlarged, then the economy goes down. This is the trade-off. Certainly one cannot expect a small inexpensive economy car to have comforts, space and performance of a much larger automobile. When one purchases an economy car they should realize that most are intended for commuting to and from work. When operating a small economy car while driving alone, the performance may in fact be impressive, but as passengers and materials are loaded into the interior, the weight increases and the performance rapidly drops. If a person takes the family and all their travelling necessities on vacation and expects to drive this little car across the continent in comfort, they are often disappointed.

The same basic rules apply to tankless heaters. Smaller ones can work well, but when they are tested to their capacity they sometimes disappoint the user. But this is the same for a tank-type heater as well. For example, a 40 gallon tank-type heater holds that water in reserve pre-heated. If a person uses three showers at once and each shower-head consumes 2 GPM, then there is a 6 GPM draw on the tank-type heater.. The math is simple, that big 40 gallon tank of water will be expended in only six and one half minutes! And you may have thought that your current 40 gallon heater was big! But use two showers and there is only a 4 GPM draw and the supply will last ten minutes. A 4 GPM tankless heater may in fact run two showers, but this depends upon the ground water temperature. As the way in which tankless heaters are sized also depends on how many degrees in "temperature rise" the heater must achieve. People who live in Northern climates (especially in the winter) receive less GPM from a tankless heater than those who live in Southern climates.

This is the way it is, but many may not realize that this rule applies to tank-type heaters as well. Even though a tank type heater must recover the full tank of water and reheat it to the desired temperature which takes time. The fact is that like a tankless heater, this older tank-type technology also changes the temperature from the incoming ground water and raises it to the pre-set desired temperature. And again, there is that same calculation of temperature rise. So, this means that people in Southern climates can expect that their tank-type heater will recover faster than those who live in the North. This is the reality and there is nothing that can change it. For this reason, the ground water temperature is a constant variable that must be considered for those who are shopping for any type of water heater.

All manufacturers specify the capacity of their tankless heaters in GPMs with a specific temperature rise. Most companies use the "45 degree rise" calculation which makes the GPM number much higher. But the reality is that typical ground water temperature in the middle of the continent is 55 degrees. A 45 degree rise will only deliver 100 degree water to the user. As 105 degrees is considered comfortable for showering and 120 degrees is the typical desired temperature of users in North America. A 45 degree rise is usually insufficient. A 70 degree rise is more realistic but with this calculation the GPM capacity will be reduced substantially. (This is the reason that we have placed temperature rise and GPM charts on our website.)

Once again we can take a lesson from the automobile manufacturers. A typical economy car may have a combined rating of 38 MPG city/highway. But we know that real world users rarely see numbers this high. Since this variable is industry wide, it can be assumed that all cars and trucks actually get lower miles per gallon than specified which makes things relatively equal.

If a person wants to buy a less expensive economy model tankless heater that produces GPMs close to the needs of the user, then it can be assumed that there will be times when the capacity is exceeded by unexpected demands or that it simply does not perform in the ways in which the buyer visualized. If an economy car is driven in the way in which it was designed and for the purpose intended, this economy car delivers the desired results. But it is not a large car capable of hauling large loads and delivering higher performance. After all, it is an "economy" car and it should be driven in an economical way. If a consumer really needs a large car because of passenger and load needs or wants high performance, then buying a small "econobox" car will only lead to occasional or possibly frequent disappointment. These same basic rules apply to any type of water heater, tank or tankless.

New water filter materials are being invented in a bid to convert the water we have into a potable commodity. Many countries that suffer from water shortage including the United States are now able to produce water that is safe to drink from water that was previously contaminated by a variety of undesirable compounds including salt.

One of the new technologies in water filtration is membrane filtration. Membrane filtration is able to remove parasites like Giardia and Cyrptosporidium that are resistant to chlorine as well as bacteria. Even if the initial water sample is highly contaminated, membrane filtration is able to produce potable water that is purer than deep artesian well water, or water from unspoiled reservoirs. Membrane filtration's growing demand is driven by Federal regulations that are becoming increasingly stringent on water drawn from surface sources for human consumption. Demand for this new water filtration method is also high in the Middle East where water is produced through the desalination of ocean water. They are now being used increasingly to clean water for domestic and industrial use.

Another new water filtration system in the market is Ultrazur 450. This new system uses Nylatron M AQS as the base product to filter water. The reason it was selected was that it is high in mechanical strength, corrosion resistant and lightweight. Nylatron M AQS is compliant with FDA regulations and is a certified product for water contact. One of these filtration units is able to process water at a rate of 10,000m³ per day. This filtration system has columns containing membranes of acetate fiber. Untreated water is then pumped up the columns and purified water exits at the top. This is done continuously and includes phases of retro rinsing. The nylon material used is made by a casting process.

A third new water filtration method is using a magnetic unit. Water is passed over a magnetic field, which rearranges the atoms in it. This does not however split the water ions. The magnetic unit is used to turn hard water into soft water. This also binds chemicals in the water making it safe to drink. The disadvantage with this method is that the water must be consumed quickly or it will revert to its previous hard state.

Additional new materials are Far Infra Red Systems, which are a natural energy form and are used to make water soft. They also charge it negatively and break it into small molecules that help hydrate the body. Catalytic conversion water filters take heavy metals, pollutants, viruses and chlorine and convert them into an oxidized form that is harmless.

There is much to be said about the new inventions. Moreover, with the environmental decay of surface water creating a water shortage crisis new material will be discovered for water filtration.

Only two products on the market effectively reduce chlorine, THMs and other chemical contaminants, as well as the heavy metal lead and the stain causing copper. One costs only $67. The other costs over $200.

It is made by the Wellness Company and the claims that the company makes are exaggerated. There is simply no reason to spend that kind of money.

Hopefully, that covers the question of how dangerous is tap water for showering. It's not a problem, as long as you have effective shower water filters in your home.

How To Supercharge Your Water Heater ?

Have you ever had to stand shivering in the cold morning air waiting for hot water with your arm outstretched, fingers extended into the cold stream of water. It seems to take forever for the water to get hot. Speed up it up with a circulating system.

Traditionally, if you had a circulating system, it meant that you had a hot water pipe that ran in a big loop from the outlet of the heater to each fixture one after the other, and then back to the inlet of the water heater through a small pump. By continuously pumping water through the loop you have instant hot water at every fixture.

This is very convenient. Hotels and motels have circulating systems; otherwise it could take hours to get hot water with such long pipes as they have.

However, instant hot water is also very expensive. Not only do you have to pay for the energy to run the pump continuously for long periods of time or even full time, but you also have to pay for the heat energy being radiated into the environment from that big loop of piping. The cost of heating the water is considerably more than the cost to run the pump.

There are a number of manufacturers producing circulating systems that utilize the cold water line as the return line.

Some of these pumping systems use small pumps that pump water very slowly, and are temperature controlled. The pump turns on when the water temperature drops below a set point, and then shuts off when the water temperature in the pipe reaches another set point. This keeps the water your entire piping system luke-warm . The water is warmer near the heater and colder the further you get from the heater, but it is tepid through out the piping system.

Most folks don't really want the cold pipe full of warm or tepid water. You don't get "Instant Hot Water" as the manufacturers claim. I think they should be honest and call them "Instant Tepid Water Systems". The Lang Auto-Circ and The Grundfos Comfort System are two such systems, and the Hot Water Lobster is another. The Hot Water Lobster doesn't have a pump, but relies on the fact that heated water rises, and the Lobster valve has to be substantially higher than the heater for the system to work.

Unfortunately these systems consume much more energy since you are heating that big loop of piping and return line and its surroundings. The cost of the energy will far outweigh any monetary savings from the water conservation aspect.

Another class of systems that use the cold water line as the return line is the "Hot Water Demand Systems". These systems only pump the water to the fixture when hot water is "demanded" by the user. The pumping costs are small; typically demand systems use less than $2.00 per year in electricity costs. This is because they run for such a brief time, typically less than 1 minute per use.

When the user turns on the pump it runs until hot water reaches the fixture and then the pump automatically shuts off. The cold water line does not end up full of warm water.

With the demand system the energy consumed is no more than if the user just ran the tap as normal. And since the water is not being circulated it does not affect the life of your tankless heater or the warranty.

The water is pumped more quickly than if you ran the faucet full throttle. You save time, water, energy, and money!

There are at least three manufacturers of demand systems, Metlund, RedyTemp, and Chilipepper. The Chilipepper will run any tankless water heater. Some models of the Metlund system will run tankless water heaters, and some won't, so be sure to inquire before you make a purchase.

Many physicians are also recommending a drinking water filter system to help protect their patient's present and future health. Of course, like with anything else, some drinking water filters are better than others, so you need to do a little research before you buy.

Just about any drinking water filter on the market will block chlorine, but some do little else. Most of the latest drinking water filters make use of carbon filtration technology, which can remove as much as 99% of chlorine, but if you view performance data, you will see that some of the inexpensive models only get rid of about 50%. Typically, it is the pitchers that are the least effective, but for vacationing, they are sometimes good to have.

So, what inside the best drinking water filters? Carbon blocks that remove chlorine and other chemicals, plus micron filtration to screen out sediment and disease causing-cysts are probably the two most important components.

A drinking water filter with ion exchange will balance minerals, preventing hard water problems and improving taste. This step also creates a neutral pH. It is better to balance minerals than to remove them, as distillation drinking water filters would do.

What about a reverse osmosis drinking water filter? That system also de-mineralizes and RO alone will not disinfect or take out chemicals. It is also quite expensive and wasteful.

In terms of customer satisfaction, drinking water filters that are easy to install are most popular. But, more and more people are finding that they feel safer with a whole house system. Although initial cost and installation fees are more, it can work out to be cost effective, since you do not have to buy a drinking water filter, a shower unit and replacement cartridges for each.

Be careful, some customers have been disappointed to learn that their new drinking water filter system is not a purifier, even though the advertising makes it sound like one. If you look at performance data sheets, before you buy, you can avoid being disappointed.

Why are drinking water filters good for the environment? There are several reasons.

Plastic bottles are piling up in the landfills. Manufacturing the plastic is a waste of natural resources. The Pacific Institute estimates that bottle manufacturers used 17 million barrels of oil in 2006. In addition, gas and oil are needed for transportation purposes. If you are making other environmentally sound changes in your life, a drinking water filter is simply one more thing that you can do.

Plus, with drinking water filters, you can save a couple of bucks per day by bottling your own, at home. It's a win-win all around.
