You have probably heard from friends or neighbors about tankless water heaters. They are also called on-demand hot water heaters, since they only heat as much water as you need for showers, laundry, washing clothes or cleaning.

Why Go Tankless?

Conventional water heaters sit like hulking monsters in your basement, garage or closet, keeping 30-50-80 gallons of water hot. Even if you don't use hot water for a number of hours, you are still paying to keep all that water hot. Standby energy loss is quite significant. If you and a couple other family members use up all the hot water taking showers, you will have to wait between 20 minutes and an hour for the unit to prepare more warm water for you.

Tankless water heaters only produce heated water when you need it. After you turn a faucet on, water is heated right then, as it flows through pipes heated by electric coils or a gas burner.

By bringing you hot water in close proximity to where you will need it, a tankless water heater allows you to reduce energy costs, while you increase efficiency by up to 50% as compared to a conventional water heater. This may save you over $150 on your annual electric or gas bill for hot water.

Put Hot Water Where it is Needed

Since smaller on-demand units can be placed almost anywhere, you can install units that will serve specific parts of your house. On-demand units are very useful in increasing your energy efficiency, overall.

How Much Do Tankless Water Heaters Cost?

Buying and installing a tankless gas water heating system costs roughly double the price of purchasing and installing a conventional heater. You may see extra plumbing charges if the unit you choose uses a different sized gas line. Tankless heaters that use electricity are less expensive than gas units.

Saving Money and Energy

Tankless heaters provide between $25 to 50%+ in savings annually. If you don't use more than 40 gallons of warm water every day, your new tankless heater will prove to be 25% - 35% more energy efficient. Even if you use closer to 85 gallons of warm water a day, you will still find the tankless heaters to be 7% - 14% more efficient. If you install on-demand units, your energy savings may even reach 50%.
