Saving water can make all the difference when it comes to your house. Learn different tips for water conservation around the house. You can also save with WaterSense fixtures and ENERGY STAR Qualified appliances.

Kitchen:

Check your faucet. You can fix leaks up top by using a repair kit, or by replacing the cartridge or ball. If you find leaks underneath your sink, the pipes, fittings, and hoses probably need to be tightened or replaced. Be sure to turn off the water supply to make repairs. A dishwasher that is ENERGY STAR Qualified can wash the dishes using less water. Scrap the dishes instead of rinsing them, and only run the dishwasher when it's full. When washing vegetables, place a basin in the bottom of the sink to catch the water. Reuse that water to water your plants or garden. Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge so you do not have to run the tap until the water gets cold.

Laundry Room:

High efficiency washers use less water and heat less water, saving you energy, water and money.

Bathroom:

Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth or shaving. Use a cup of water to rinse your razor. Consider installing a water-saving aerator or switch to an EPA WaterSense faucet. Switch to a WaterSense certified showerhead and turn off the water when shampooing. If you have kids in the house, limit shower time to a few songs on the radio. Check your toilet for leaks. Lowe's carries toilet replacement parts and kits and WaterSense toilets.

Lawn and Garden:

You can empty the water from a dehumidifier into flower pots and gardens. Use a broom instead of a hose to rinse and clean your driveway or patio. A rain barrel can collect water that you can use to water your plants. Plant drought resistant plants that are waterwise. Use timers and a water gauge to monitor how much you are adding. A lawn only needs about an inch of water a week. The best time to water is in the early morning. A soaker hose or drip irrigation system delivers water to the roots of the plants, using water more efficiently. Use mulch and compost each year to keep water in the soil and minimize evaporation.
