Waiting for the Plumber - Who Is Really Coming Into Your Home?

Sound scary? Well, it's true, every single day millions of in-home service calls are conducted by service technicians with a known criminal history. It is a known fact that after release from prison, many convicts find their way into the service industry where background screening seems less stringent. Many home service providers like, plumbers, landscapers, appliance repair people, painters and similar contractors do not even conduct background checks on their employees. When they do, they tend to use an inexpensive "instant" online database search vs. a true background investigation. These instant online screening products are very inaccurate and offer little peace of mind. Recent research indicates that as many as 30% of job applicants in the service industry have a significant criminal history. Even more surprising is the fact that companies claiming to screen all of their employees average one-in-six applicants with a disqualifying criminal history that slip through ineffective screening. Among the crimes going undetected by instant background products are many drug-related, theft, sex crimes and yes, even murder!

It's a shame that many service providers care so little about their customers, continuing to put them at risk every day by sending would-be criminals onto their properties. There are real companies out there doing real background investigations with licensed private investigators as little as $59. These investigators actually go directly to the courts to secure records in order to detect any criminal history. These more thorough, "investigative" background checks protect millions of home and business owners receiving service calls each day. A service vendor that cares, would have no problem investing a little extra into the screening process of their employees before sending them into your home around your family. So, next time you need a plumber, or someone to come out and fix your refrigerator. will you wonder who will be coming to visit? Will you worry more about how much the repair will cost or how good the warranty is? Or, will you worry about yourself, your family and personal safety? After my one horrible experience, nobody comes into my home or business unless I know who they are and they have been properly screened by something more that a database search. Everyone has the right to know who is on their property!

I find that by demanding proof of a clear background, I worry less about my safety. There are several directories out there touting qualified contractors that one can use for reference. But this doesn't mean a really scary guy won't show up at your door to perform the work. Next time you need to make a service call, make sure to find out what kind of person is coming to your home or business. Ultimately, you have control over who you invite onto your property. Demand crime-free workers when hiring contractors!
