But just let it keep running for a few minutes until it begins to run really clear. When it does, your water is ready to drink.

In fact, the process is simple for all types of home water filtration systems, so whether you want a filter for your counter top, under the counter or your shower, don't ever let installation put you off.

When we start using these bacteria grow on the sand particles and those bacteria on the sand remove bad tastes in water.

What we drink from the faucet many times has a muddy and stale odor. It is not something that affects our health, but many people will not drink water that tastes bad or dirty. Many companies continue to strive to remove the bad tastes because people think that bad taste means harmful things in the water. Water companies are always striving to change and upgrade their filters, however, they have found that maybe leaving an older system in place and adding additional filters after going through the first one may be a good choice.

The compounds that are the culprits of the bad taste are usually geosmin and methyl lisoborneol. These compounds are in water organically. When using a sand based water filter it accumulates a barrier or a type of film on the outside of the grains. When new water passes through the sand with this covering of film it attracts and removes these compounds from and eventually breaks them down.

Old pipes in your house can also cause bad taste, especially if your house has copper or a metal base which it uses for the pipes. You may notice a difference in taste from your home to a newer home. Some people think the newer home has water that actually tastes worse. This may be caused by a similar fashion as mentioned above.

So if you are using a sand type of water filter and you really want fresher tasting drinking water you may want to continue to use the old system.

Many physicians are also recommending a drinking water filter system to help protect their patient's present and future health. Of course, like with anything else, some drinking water filters are better than others, so you need to do a little research before you buy.

Just about any drinking water filter on the market will block chlorine, but some do little else. Most of the latest drinking water filters make use of carbon filtration technology, which can remove as much as 99% of chlorine, but if you view performance data, you will see that some of the inexpensive models only get rid of about 50%. Typically, it is the pitchers that are the least effective, but for vacationing, they are sometimes good to have.

Multi-stage systems cost a little more initially, but the daily cost of use is often less. A cheap drinking water filter might seem like a good idea, until you find out the cost of replacement parts. The better companies post the cost of use on their websites, but of course if you are shopping in a department store, it may be a little more difficult to figure out.

So, what inside the best drinking water filters? Carbon blocks that remove chlorine and other chemicals, plus micron filtration to screen out sediment and disease causing-cysts are probably the two most important components.

A drinking water filter with ion exchange will balance minerals, preventing hard water problems and improving taste. This step also creates a neutral pH. It is better to balance minerals than to remove them, as distillation drinking water filters would do.

What about a reverse osmosis drinking water filter? That system also de-mineralizes and RO alone will not disinfect or take out chemicals. It is also quite expensive and wasteful.

In terms of customer satisfaction, drinking water filters that are easy to install are most popular. But, more and more people are finding that they feel safer with a whole house system. Although initial cost and installation fees are more, it can work out to be cost effective, since you do not have to buy a drinking water filter, a shower unit and replacement cartridges for each.

Be careful, some customers have been disappointed to learn that their new drinking water filter system is not a purifier, even though the advertising makes it sound like one. If you look at performance data sheets, before you buy, you can avoid being disappointed.

Why are drinking water filters good for the environment? There are several reasons.

Plastic bottles are piling up in the landfills. Manufacturing the plastic is a waste of natural resources. The Pacific Institute estimates that bottle manufacturers used 17 million barrels of oil in 2006. In addition, gas and oil are needed for transportation purposes. If you are like me, you probably will spend a bunch of time searching the internet for the best faucet water filter. I don't blame you, when I went looking for a faucet filter I was amazed at the quality and cost differences I found. So I thought it would be good to give you a head start and recap the top 3 things to look out for when looking for the best faucet water filter.

#1 - Checkout what contaminates get removed

I was surprised to find out that not all filters are created equal. I reviewed products from 10 different faucet filter companies. On each companies websites they have listed all the different contaminates their filters will remove. I was expecting them to be all very similar but was I wrong. The range of contaminates that each product removes is astounding, even though the faucet water filter prices are all about the same. Some units only remove the basics like chlorine and lead. While the best faucet water filters also remove up to 10 other contaminates from Cysts to Benzene.

#2 - Effectiveness of the Filter

Here's another area I was shocked to find out was an issue. You can take two filters that on the surface remove the same contaminates but their effectiveness will vary wildly. For example lets looks at an element that would seem simple to filter out, Chlorine. I looked at the top 10 filters and the percent of effective removal ranged from 75% to 99%. Pretty shocking, I fact this kind of range holds true for all the different contaminates one would like removed from their drinking water.

#3 - Cost per Gallon

A faucet filter can be a significant investment, so you'll want to check out the cost to operate one. There are a couple of cost measurements you will find quoted, they are "cost per 1000 gallons" and "cost per gallon". These two measures gives us a benchmark that we can compare the on-going cost of different water filters. Here again the costs are at both ends of the spectrum, and they don't seem to correlate with the effectiveness or numbers of contaminates removed. I found on a "cost per gallon" basis a range of 9.8 to 25 cents per gallon. This means some filters cost almost 3 times more to operate but they don't always provide 3 times cleaner water.

The reason that I call this a low quality water filtration system is because the primary use of RO is de-mineralization of water for industrial purposes. It is better suited for preventing mineral build-up in industrial machinery such as boilers than it is for cleaning drinking water.

The major problem lies in the fact that the porous membrane filter is incapable of removing any contaminant of the same molecular weight or less than the water that carries it. This means that any liquids or microbial contaminants are allowed to pass on to the household of the consumer. How could a system that does so little ever be considered anything except low quality water filters?

Once you get rid of the microbes, you have three primary types of contaminants. They are chemical compounds, gases and metallic ions. Examples of chemicals include chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, prescription drugs and specific compounds like benzene and perchlorate.

Quality water filtration remove chemicals and gases with granulated carbon and other media through a process called adsorption. Adsorption is a process where a gas or liquid accumulates to form a film of molecules or atoms on the surface of a porous material. So, these elements form a direct buffer between these liquids contaminants and your tap.

When attempting to rid yourself of the effects of toxic heavy metals you need to employ ion exchange technology. Ion exchange is a process where there is an exchange of ions between two electrolytes (minerals). It can also be an exchange between an electrolyte and a metal. Quality water filters will almost always offer you this option.

You can get the kind of protection that you need if you take the time to seek out the best filters for the task at hand.
